The Industrial Biotechnology Academy, is a four-year program at Lake Gibson High School for students throughout Polk County in 9th - 12th grades. Students should apply for the academy while in 8th grade in order to begin pre-requisite courses. The academy will prepare students for entry-level industry positions as an assistant biotechnician or for university lab experiences. Lessons include skills and materials of biotechnology, study and isolation of DNA and proteins, plant cloning and breeding, as well as biotechnology in agriculture and medicine. This is an honors level academy in which students learn basic research skills leading to careers in the fields of medicine, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, industry, agriculture, environmental and forensic sciences.

Have you ever wondered where your food comes from? Does the idea of extracting DNA from a strawberry or manipulating the growth of a plant intrigued you? Have you ever imagined a world where vegetables grow without soil? If so, the Lake Gibson Middle School Pre-Biotechnology Academy of Applied Learning may be for you. This is a hands-on program that teaches students lab techniques and procedures. The course will focus on the integration of biotechnological concepts and applied laboratory investigations.
